Laurel Lake Board Appoints Five New Members

Laurel Lake Retirement Community, the not-for-profit continuing care retirement community located on 150 acres in Hudson, Ohio, is pleased to announce the appointment of five new members to its Board of Directors.  

Joan GarroJOAN GARRO has been appointed as a Resident Member of the Laurel Lake Board of Directors. A resident of the Laurel Lake community for over five years, Joan is a former medical office administrator who managed a multi-physician, multi-site practice with 40 employees, Northeast Ohio Eye Surgeons, for eleven years. Prior to that, she worked as a Clinical Supervisor on a medical unit at Summa, Akron City Hospital. A registered nurse, Joan attended The University of Akron. She was an American Red Cross volunteer for many years and also served as a Church Parish Council Member for The Nativity of the Lord Jesus in Akron. At Laurel Lake, Joan is the current President of the Resident Council and served as President-Elect from 2013-2014. She is an active member of the Resident Marketing and Welcoming Committees and a past member of the Program and Volunteer Committees. Joan contributes daily to Laurel Lake’s quality of life with numerous volunteer positions throughout the campus.

John MulliganJOHN T. MULLIGAN, ESQ. is Senior of Counsel with the Cleveland law firm of McDonald Hopkins, LLRC, specializing in general corporate and healthcare law. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and an active member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Bar Association of Greater Cleveland. He has served on the board of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association Foundation since 2010, and was an Ambassador for Legal Aid, Partners in Justice in 2014. He has served on the boards of numerous Cleveland-area organizations over the years, including Catholic Charities Services Corporation, Catholic Counseling Center, The Woodruff Foundation, and the Cleveland Skating Club. John was a member of the Laurel Lake Retirement Community Board of Directors from 1997-2009, serving as Vice Chairman from 2000-2006 and Chairman from 2006-2009. He earned a BA from The University of Notre Dame in 1968, then served on active duty in the United States Navy from 1968-1971. He earned his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1974. John and his wife Mary reside in Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Liz MurphyLIZ MURPHY is one of Hudson’s best known citizens, a successful businesswoman and dedicated community volunteer. She owned and operated The Learned Owl Book Shop, one of the region’s oldest independent booksellers, for nearly 30 years, transforming the downtown Hudson shop into a thriving business that sponsored community events like the wildly popular Harry Potter Festivals, drawing many thousands of visitors and garnering national attention. Prior to purchasing the shop, Liz worked for Marriott Corporation, Olga Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Pacific Bell Telephone and A.T. Kearney Executive Search. She earned her BA in English from Lawrence University in Wisconsin. Liz currently serves on the boards of The Merchants of Hudson and Hudson Community First, and as Executive Director of Destination Hudson has been instrumental in developing and staffing the Hudson Visitor Center. She appears each month on Frank Youngwerth’s Good Day in Hudson program on HCTV, and writes the popular "Where in Hudson Is This?" column for the Hudson Hub-Times. Liz has served previous terms on the Laurel Lake Retirement Community board and is currently on the Laurel Lake Retirement Community Foundation board. She resides in Hudson with her husband Greg.

David WilliamsDAVID WILLIAMS has been appointed as a Resident Member of the Laurel Lake Board of Directors. He and his wife, Jinny, have lived in the Laurel Lake community for over 20 years. Dave currently works as a consultant with his son David in their Cleveland-based international conference management company, Administrative Management Services, Inc. Previously, he spent 35 years in the machine tool industry, serving as President of Cleveland Twist Drill Company and Vice President of its parent, Acme-Cleveland Corporation. Dave earned his BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and his MBA and ABD from Case Western Reserve University. He is a past President of the Orange School Board, a former advisor for the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Treasury Department and Council of Economic Advisors, a Fellow of the National Association of Business Economists, and served as Executive Director of the International Association of Energy Economics from 1991-2011. Dave served multiple terms on the boards of both Laurel Lake Retirement Community and the Laurel Lake Foundation in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, and was the Foundation’s first Secretary/Treasurer. He has been active in numerous Resident Association committees, currently serving on both the Resident Finance and Healthy Living Committees.

William YoungWILLIAM A. YOUNG, JR. brings more than 30 years of healthcare industry experience to the Laurel Lake Board of Directors. He has served as president and CEO of St. John Medical Center, co-owned by The Sisters of Charity Health System and University Hospitals, since 2011. Previously, Bill was chief operating officer for South Pointe and Marymount hospitals. Before coming to Cleveland, he worked at Humility of Mary Health Partners where he served four years as President of St. Joseph Health Center in Warren. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Healthcare Executives Association of Northeast Ohio, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Bill currently serves as a board member for the Westshore Chamber of Commerce and is active in the North Coast, North Ridgeville, and Lorain County Chambers of Commerce. He has served on the boards of Catholic Charities Health and Human Services, American Red Cross Northern Ohio Blood Services Region, Warrensville Heights Area Chamber of Commerce and Harvard Community Services Center. Bill earned his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Toledo and a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio Northern University. He and his wife Mari Jo reside in Hudson, Ohio.
