WINGED JEWELS: The Life and Times of Butterflies and Moths
May 1, 2012 -- On Thursday, May 10 at 3 p.m., leading conservationists Judy Semroc and Larry Rosche will present "Winged Jewels: The Life and Times of Butterflies and Moths" at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive in Hudson. Through a vivid slide presentation, participants will gain insight into the habitat and life cycles of butterflies and moths; rare and endangered butterflies and moths in the northeast Ohio region; and the thoughtful and creative ways one can employ to invite butterflies and moths to visit and live.
Judy Semroc and Larry Rosche, bothConservation Specialists working in the Natural Areas Division of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, are co-authors of The Dragonflies & Damselflies of Northeast Ohio. Judy is the founder of Operation Botanic Rescue (a volunteer plant-rescue group), Quail Hollow Land Conservancy and Chrysalis in Time – the first Ohio chapter of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). In 2010, Judy received the Portage County Environmental Hero Award. As a former Petroleum Geologist and science teacher, Judy loves to learn about and share her passion for the natural world through hikes, interpretive programs and photography.
In 2007, Larry received the Ohio Biological Service’s Naturalist of the Year award and in 2008, he received the prestigious Cardinal Award for Outstanding Contribution to Ohio Conservation. In 2009, Larry was awarded the Portage County Environmental Hero award. A longtime birder, Larry penned Birds of the Cleveland Region in 2005. He is also employed as the range distribution mapmaker for Houghton Mifflin Company’s Peterson Field Guide Series™.
