Explore Cleveland Museum of Natural History Extreme Mammals exhibition
March 3, 2011 -- Step right up, folks! The Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s remarkable exhibition, "Extreme Mammals: The Biggest, Smallest, and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time," will astonish and amaze you.
A bee-sized bat! A beaver with horns! Whales with teeth as big as a slice of pizza!
There's even a live colony of naked mole rats with long, sharp incisors that the museum's director of wildlife resources, Harvey Webster, recently described as "saber-toothed sausages."
The traveling exhibition was organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, with the Cleveland Museum as one of its collaborators.
On Monday, March 7 at 3:30 p.m. at Laurel Lake, join a special Distance Learning with University Circle program with Joe Hannibal, Ph.D., the museum’s Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology specializing in extreme arthropods. Hannibal researches some of the gigantic invertebrates that crept and crawled around our world before the reptiles and mammals got around to trying out extreme body sizes. Join Dr. Hannibal as he leads you through phases of gigantism seen in multiple species, and catch highlights of the "Extreme Mammals" exhibit. To register, call 1-866-650-2100 today.
On Wednesday, March 9 at 2 p.m., Laurel Lake residents and guests will take a Field Trip to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History for a behind-the-scenes curator guided tour of the Botany, Cultural Anthropology and Invertebrate Zoology collections, along with highlights of "Extreme Mammals." Laurel Lake residents receive priority registration for this event; to inquire about ticket availability, please call Betty Presti at 330-655-1492.
