"THE DIGITAL MUSE: TECHNOLOGY AND CLASSICAL ARCHEOLOGY"
Thursday, March 1 @ 4:30 PM
Live from the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities at Case Western Reserve University. Join Assistant Professors Paul Iversen and Andrea De Giorgi for a fascinating look at how Classical archaeology, as with most sciences that have an interest in the spreading of human phenomena over space, has developed a way to harness Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in its research. Using a landscape in southwestern Anatolia as a case-study, De Giorgi will discuss how archeology, previously confined to the observation of single sites and their settlement history, is now using GIS lenses to articulate more refined questions about regions and districts in antiquity and how these were experienced and shaped by human agencies. Iversen will talk about recent technologies he has used to study the inscriptions on the Antikythera Mechanism, a bronze geared device from the 2nd or 1st century BCE that is the world’s oldest known analogue computer and one of the most important artifacts ever discovered for understanding ancient astronomy and engineering. The inscriptions are studied via images captured using CT-scans and Micro-Focus X-ray, which are digitally reconstructed into astoundingly clear 3-D images.

Live from The Cleveland Museum of Art.How we see ourselves influences our perspectives, our decisions and the daily experience of living. Artists create tangible evidence of their process of reflection through self-portraits. In observing how luminaries from Rembrandt to Picasso represented themselves, we will explore the artist’s personal statements, historical moments and technical approaches.
"REMBRANDT IN AMERICA & REMBRANDT PRINTS"
Field Trip to The Cleveland Museum of Art
Wednesday, March 28 @ 2:00 PM
Rembrandt in America will be the first major exhibition to explore in depth the collecting of Rembrandt paintings in America. Consisting of approximately fifty works, the exhibition will bring together autograph paintings by Rembrandt as well as others thought to be by the artist when they entered American collections, but whose attributions can no longer be maintained. The exhibition also presents a survey of the long career of Rembrandt as a painter, including his studio and a broader network of adapters, followers, and copyists. Rembrandt in America offers a rare opportunity to examine the evolving opinions and methods of scholars and collectors regarding what constituted an autograph Rembrandt painting over a period of more than a century.
The companion exhibition, Rembrandt Prints from The Morgan Library & Museum, includes 500 impressions, which survey the artist’s career as a printmaker from about 1626 to about 1661, during which time he executed some 290 plates. The Cleveland Museum of Art will exhibit a large group of these works, all of which demonstrate that Rembrandt was not only a gifted painter and superb draftsman but also an extremely experimental and original printmaker.
