Founders Day honors the past, celebrates the future

May 22, 2009 -- On Tuesday, May 19 at 5:30 p.m., 110 guests gathered at Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson to celebrate the community's 20th Anniversary Founders Day Banquet & Community Awards.

Honored guests included Laurel Lake visionary and founder Richard Eastburn; Laurel Lake's first Executive Director, Paul Younger; founding Board members Dr. Donald Long, Dr. Donald Junglas, and Rev. Richard Shipley; Hudson's Mayor William Currin and First Lady Betty Currin; and a large assembly of residents and staff who have lived or worked at Laurel Lake for longer than ten years.

Jim McKay, the current Chairman of Laurel Lake's Board of Directors, presented Laurel Lake's 2009 Quality of Life Award to residents Charles and Betty Haake for their many years of caring service to the community. A new Bible will be placed in Laurel Lake's Serenity Chapel in the couple's honor. Laurel Lake resident Sally Davies, chair of the Welcoming Committee, accepted the 2009 Committee of the Year Award for the group’s work in successfully welcoming hundreds of new residents over the years, and designing a "Newcomer Orientation" program to help new arrivals settle comfortably into their new homes. A plaque honoring the Welcoming Committee will be placed on a bench in Laurel Lake's newly remodeled Main Entrance.

Mayor Currin expressed best wishes on behalf of the City of Hudson, and read a Proclamation establishing May 19, 2009 as "Laurel Lake Day" in Hudson. The evening culminated with a moving twenty-year retrospective of the community in a video montage.
